What is the applied master’s program?

Students enrolled in the in-person Masters of Science in Applied Atmospheric Science are required to fulfill internship experience. In the applied master’s program, students participate in applied research in atmospheric physics, chemistry, and/or dynamics in the weather, water, and/or climate industry.

Students have the opportunity to learn Python tools to analyze weather and climate big datasets, apply weather and climate data analysis to understand energy usage, and apply weather and climate visualizations to communicate risk.

In addition, graduate students will have access to the New York State Mesonet — a collection of over 120 advanced weather observation stations across New York State, a state-of-the-art map room to display and analyze weather data, the Albany National Weather Service office and the Weather-Climate-Emergency Preparedness Hub right on UAlbany's campus.


Applied Master’s Internship Course Description

Enrollment in AATM 690 provides students with an opportunity to obtain experience in the application of atmospheric science through placements within commercial or private firms or within relevant state, federal, or local government labs or similar positions. Arranged internships can be local or distant and/or remote or hybrid. Internships in which the intern in actively engaged in the application of atmospheric science/meteorology theory or data analysis, interpretation, or communication, or instrumentation will be considered for AATM 690. Students interested in AATM 690 must discuss the internship opportunity with the DAES Internship Coordinator to obtain a permission number to enroll in AATM 690. Internships can be paid, and students should be aware of UAlbany credit and course fees. Six credits of AATM 690 can count towards the degree.
